We have more health information available than at any point in human history. Yet, 4 in 5 people don’t feel confident managing their own health.1 We are moving from a problem of access to a problem of action: understanding what you find, judging what to trust, and having the confidence to act.

Health literacy is the difference between having information and the clarity to know what to do with it. More than half of us lack this clarity, and it doesn’t discriminate by geography, income, or education. Health literacy affects all of us.

At Opella, building clarity through health literacy is key to delivering our mission:  “Health in your hands”, because health literacy is foundational for better self-care. When knowledge improves, confidence grows. And when confidence grows, people manage their own health better.

Health literacy program.

At Opella, we act across the full self-care journey. Our health literacy program is built on 3 interconnected pillars:

Clarity in our products.

We start with ourselves by simplifying our products, communications, and instructions.

Clarity in our advertising.

We create trusted, accessible information so people can better understand and manage their health.

Clarity at the counter.

We partner with pharmacists to turn everyday questions into confident conversations at the point of care.

This program has 2 key targets:

50M

Increase the health literacy of 50 million people annually through our consumer campaigns.

200K

Partner with 200K pharmacists by 2030 to strengthen health literacy through our trainings.

The Triple Value of Self-Care.

More effective self-care delivers collective benefits: increasing economic, social, and environmental value simultaneously.

This is what we call the Triple Value of Self-Care, where self-care:

1.

Supports better health outcomes so people can live better and longer.

2.

Eases pressure on healthcare systems by addressing symptoms and conditions before they require clinical intervention.

3.

Lowers the carbon footprint of care by reducing unnecessary consultations, travel, and prescription dependency.

Beyond our direct work, we participate in industry initiatives to support the health of people and planet. We partner with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) supporting the front lines of self-care and are members of Forum for the Future's Climate Health Coalition, working at the intersection of climate impact and health.
