Description / Scope of the Technical Need.
We are looking for next-generation microbiome-based solutions—including probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics—grounded in the latest advances in microbiome science and targeting digestive health, immune support, allergy relief, metabolic health, liver health, women’s health, cardiovascular health, brain and cognitive function, energy and vitality, joint health, skin health from within, sleep and stress management, as well as the management of drug-induced dysbiosis, including GLP-1-associated effects.
Solutions should have a clear and robust mechanism of action and strong scientific validation, including at least one clinical trial for established health benefits or, for drug-induced dysbiosis, robust non-animal preclinical evidence with clinical data preferred.
Proposed solutions should be fully characterized, supported by an initial regulatory assessment for food/dietary supplement across Opella priority markets.
Oral and/or nasal delivery formats are in scope; topical applications are excluded.
Background.
Our understanding of the microbiome’s role in human health has advanced rapidly over the past decade, driven by progress in omics technologies and the ability to characterize microbial ecosystems at greater scale and resolution across populations and disease states. These advances are creating new opportunities to develop more targeted and differentiated biotic solutions.
Emerging approaches include the discovery of novel probiotics from the human gut and vaginal microbiomes, enhanced functional screening of traditional lactic acid bacteria, the development of more selective and efficacious prebiotics at lower doses, and the exploration of next-generation postbiotics base d on microbial metabolites.
Together, these advances are broadening the potential of microbiome-based interventions beyond digestive health to support immune, metabolic, liver, cardiovascular, brain and cognitive, women’s, skin, allergy, energy and vitality, joint, and sleep and stress-related health, as well as emerging applications such as the management of drug-induced dysbiosis.
Key Success Criteria.
Must-have Requirements.
- Proprietary or differentiated biotic ingredients/technologies with unique functional benefits.
- A clear and scientifically substantiated mechanism of action linked to the targeted health benefit.
- Robust scientific validation:
For established health areas: relevant preclinical evidence and at least one well-designed human clinical trial.
For drug-induced dysbiosis, including GLP-1-associated effects: robust non-animal preclinical evidence, with clinical data preferred.
- A fully characterized solution.
- Regulatory readiness or a credible regulatory feasibility pathway for food/dietary supplement use in key target markets including, but not limited to, the EU, US, Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam, and China.
- Demonstrated scalability and manufacturing feasibility.
Preferred Requirements.
- Strong IP position or other meaningful barriers to entry.
- Clear formulation framework and understanding of feasible product formats, supported by proof-of-concept work and preliminary data on key formulation parameters
Approaches not of interest.
- GMO-based solutions
- Topical delivery formats
- Solutions with insufficient scientific substantiation or an unclear mechanism of action
- Solutions without relevant non-animal or human evidence
- Solutions with no credible regulatory pathway for food/dietary supplement use
- Solutions that are insufficiently characterized to assess formulation or product-development feasibility
Target Group.
Adults and children, no specific health conditions
